I. College selection discussion

  • If students have not yet finalized their college list, we begin with a discussion of what students are looking for in colleges, e.g.,:

    • Large research program?

    • Rural environment?

    • Liberal arts majors?

  • I will discuss frankly about which schools are a reach, which are a good fit, and which are safety.

II. Strategic advice on how to strengthen your candidacy in your last year
  • We discuss:

    • Senior year course selection

    • Leadership positions in extracurricular activities to aim for

    • Independent research projects or creative projects that will strength their application

    • Building a rapport with teachers to serve as references

III. Full application preparation and editing

    • Drafting a resume

    • Brainstorming and drafting personal statements, essays, and short answer questions

    • Choosing teachers for references

    • Editing final application package

    • Preparing for admissions interviews

IV. Merit and financial aid discussion
  • We will discuss various merit scholarships and financial aid packages.

  • I will walk you through the process of applying for financial aid and financial aid negotiating. By negotiating packages alone, you could save thousands or tens of thousands on tuition.

V. Finalizing college selection
  • We will discuss your acceptances and how to choose which college to select based on best fit and financial package.

VI. Advising throughout college
  • I am happy to continue as a counselor as you advance through college, prepare essays and theses, apply to internships, and think about how to best package yourself for your post-graduation employment.
